Dr. Jan Albert is a professor in infectious disease control especially virology at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology, Karolinska Institutet, and a senior consultant in clinical virology at the Department of Microbiology at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Jan Albert obtained his degree as MD at Karolinska Institutet in 1983 and PhD at Karolinska Institutet in 1990. He became specialist in Clinical Virology in 1990, assistant professor at Karolinska Institutet in 1992 and in 2006 became full professor in Infectious Disease Control especially Virology, Karolinska Institutet. Jan Albert has published more than 150 referee-examined scientific papers. The research is focussed on genetic and biological variability of HIV as well as the interactions between HIV and the immune system. We study how HIV evades humoral and cellular immunity. We also study the emergence and spread of HIV variants that are resistant to antiretroviral drugs and use molecular epidemiology to track the spread of HIV in Sweden and abroad. We use sophisticated molecular and phyologenetic techniques including massive parallel pyrosequencing.
